Vegan, plant-based, alternative protein… these buzzwords of this century are increasingly used. Personally, I am a meat lover, but isn’t variety the spice of life? I decided to try a plant-based diet for a week and it spiced up my life more than I thought.
Going plant-based brings you more much than just its health benefits. Here are five reasons you should try a completely plant-based diet for a spell, perhaps a week or even several months.
1. You will be more food aware
While going through my day, I realized that I became much more conscious of what I was putting in my mouth. Rather than munching on whatever snack in sight, I started reading labels to ensure how much protein, carbohydrate and nutrients I was getting before putting those snacks in my mouth.
2. You will learn a whole lot
From planning to preparing meals, I uncovered an entire spectrum of plants and vegetables that I previously didn’t know and it refreshed my perspective toward food and eating. Furthermore, I learned the many amazingly creative and wonderful ways to make different tasty meals with just the same few vegetables.
3. You will drink more water
Having a plant-based diet increases your body’s fiber intake and, in order to be properly digested, fiber absorbs a substantial amount water. Every day during that plant-based diet week, I found myself reaching for that cup much more than I usually would.
4. You will feel more energetic
Well, you should or perhaps you aren’t doing it right. A well-balanced plant-based diet tends to increase your overall nutritional intake as food-based mineral and vitamin absorption is much efficient than that of supplements. Furthermore, the high fiber content of vegetables tend to make you feel fuller so the digestive systems works less. In addition, the increased water intake reduces dehydration and perhaps that was why I felt much more energetic and alert.
5. You will practice discipline
With every successful change comes the challenge to our comforts. Successfully going on a plant-based diet will definitely require discipline. The temptation to grab your usual favorite snacks or to enjoy your favorite hotdog rather than choosing a healthier, plant-based alternative will be strong but herein lies an opportunity to prove to yourself that your willpower is stronger.
